Popcorn for Packing!
by Lisa Tsoupelis on October 22, 2009
Last week I was having a conversation with a friend who is currently living in Turkey. She is worried about sending gifts home for the holidays without
them being broken. Like me she is concerned with environmental issues and the impact that our everyday decisions have on Mother Earth’s well-being.
Her main frustration is where she can buy eco-friendly mail packaging . Popcorn is my response to her, initially she thinks I have gone completely mad, then once she realizes that I am not suggesting flavoring it with butter, she jumps for joy. Popcorn is a great environmentally friendly package filler. It is a natural product and when it arrives at its intended destination can be fed to the birds, which in turn will reduce the waste that ends up on a daily basis in the landfill sites.
Next time you mail a package consider using popcorn instead of the traditional Styrofoam chips. As many companies still continue to use Styrofoam chips and I would recommend recycling them by reusing for future packaging, but when you need new packing material, pull out the popcorn kernels and start popping.
