Have a Green Halloween
by Lisa Tsoupelis on October 29, 2009
As Halloween approaches everyone is busily decorate their homes, buying bags of candy and selecting which costume to purchase for themselves or
their children. Halloween really is a fun holiday, and there is nothing more exciting for me than to walk around the Arlington neighborhoods and see all the spooky decorations, and Halloween lights.
Whilst enjoying Halloween, I have often wondered how much waste is generated for this holiday, and all of the holidays for that matter. Do children really eat all that candy, and what happens to the trick or treat costumes after they have been worn on the night of Halloween? Plus all the individually wrapped pieces of candy, the costumes produced and discarded, Halloween decorations purchased, and all the paper products. Wow when you really think about it Halloween and all holidays are pretty un-eco-friendly. As Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, I was determined to find a way to celebrate Halloween in an environmentally friendly way.
After a little research online, I came across this great website called Green Halloween®, their aim is provide information on how to enjoy all holidays whilst still practicing an eco-friendly lifestyle. They define Green as ‘Good for People, Good for the Planet and good for the community’. Which made me think even further about how all these candy items filled with preservatives and sugar, certainly can’t be good for children.
Green Halloween® website identifies ways to think outside of the candy box on Halloween, by offering alternatives such as giving small toys, organic or healthy treats. Their website has pages and pages of information which covers environmentally friendly costumes, energy saving Halloween lighting, creating a green Halloween neighborhood, earth-friendly treats and even green Halloween shopping tips.
Green Halloween® website allows each and everyone of us to enjoy this holiday in an environmentally friendly manner without losing out on the spirit of Halloween. Check out Green Halloween® website for all your Halloween needs. I would also love to hear any eco-friendly tips you may already be using for this holiday.
Happy Halloween and I hope it is a green one………
