Are you still digesting all of the information from the 2009 DC Green Festival™?

by genevieve concannon on October 28, 2009

I know that I am. It has been nearly two weeks and I am still trying to wrap my brain around all of the deliciously informative details that I soaked up while trolling the aisles of the DC Convention Center on October 10th through the 11th at the Green Festival™.

The sixth annual Green Festival™, a joint project of Global Exchange and Green America, was again, an astonishing hit! Walking into the event center, dozens of helpful volunteers patrolled the vastness Green Festivalseeking out those of us with the ever-present deer-in-headlights look of sheer overwhelm. There was so much to see and so much to learn! The convention center, which I am sure, usually does not have the aroma of a whole food store but did for this particular weekend, was buzzing with thousands of like minded individuals seeking knowledge and- let’s just come right out and say it- they were there for the gratis loot!

Do you want information on the Mind, Body, or Home? How about all of the above? At this festival, you could get the answers. Hundreds of vendors set up in neat rows displayed their products and services, ready to answer questions and give away samples and, of course, business information. I was particularly amazed by the masses of attendees who were swarming the vendors, asking how they could make change their current habits to make a difference in our global community.

The event was about educating the visitors and the programs did exactly that.  Informal lectures were held about every 15 minutes across the convention center: You could learn how to make mud bricks, create mulch, plant at the right time of the year, how to reduce your over all carbon footprint… Before the event, I wasn’t aware that there is a product made out of hemp that can replace particle board. I was formerly unaware that there is a sustainable development Masters program at George Washington designed for executives to take classes in the evening. I was formerly unaware that there are dozens of green builders in the DC Metro area ready to help people create their dream home, or help adjust their current lifestyle to be more sustainable.

The information was there, and over the next few weeks, I’ll feed you in bite sizes some of the interesting things that I was able to learn from the 2009 DC Green Festival™. Bon appetit!
