Department of Defense Going Green

by Lisa Tsoupelis on October 19, 2009

The Department of Defense is the nations largest consumer of energy. So it is no surprise that in a time when environmental issues are paramount Dod Greenthat they need to start making some energy efficiency changes.

An impressive solar-energy array at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is saving money for the Air Force and decreasing the service’s reliance on fossil fuels.  This solar energy system is the largest renewable energy plant in North America. The savings to the environment and the tax payers are impressive, about $83,000 a month and 24,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, plus it is about to power about 28% of the base.

There are many other environmental actions being implemented throughout DOD, including wind power, low-speed electric vehicles and hybrid-electric vehicles and the commitment to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020, to name just a few. With an estimated 3 million employees, DOD going green could really make a big environmental difference, and set a standard that others should follow.
