Springfield VA
Steeped in rich history, Springfield VA is considered to be one of the last accessible communities to The District. Just over twelve miles away from Washington DC, Springfield’s seemingly complex system of freeways and interchanges come to be known as “The Mixing Bowl” allow for easy access to all of Northern Virginia. Originally founded as a railroad station in the mid 1800′s, it was soon discovered that Springfield’s rich soils and rushing streams made a prime location for a tobacco plantation. Many of the main thoroughfares still hold true to this history, with Rolling Road and Ravensworth Road, named for where the original plantation once stood.
Springfield is set back in rolling hills with a myriad of outdoor recreational spots, among them, historical Lake Accotink Park with the wonderful original carousel, Hidden Pond Nature Center a truly hidden gen of an outdoors experience and the 700 acre Pohick Stream Valley Park.
In the early 1950′s Springfield experienced a shift from rural farmland to the densely wooded lots that have long since become the current subdivisions. With many established and mature neighborhoods of moderately priced larger single family homes, Springfield is a great spot for people looking to start a family or settle down as empty nesters in close enough proximity to The District. The Springfield Mall is the second largest indoor shopping experience in Fairfax County, next to the Tysons projects in neighboring McLean.
