Oh glorious food, how I live to eat and not eat to live.  One of the many beautiful things of the Washington Metropolitan area is the incredible diversity in culture, which is clearly reflected in the restaurants we have available.  The choices are enough to make a “foodie” like me want to devote my love for food into an occupation. Isushi-rock mean I try new restaurants like it’s my job.  Living and working in North Arlington, I can say I have tried almost all the restaurants along the Rossyln to Ballston Orange Line corridor. I have my list of loves, likes and hates (…and absolute loathes). With that said, I checked out the new “Sushi Rock” located between Courthouse and Rosslyn (1900 Clarendon Blvd at the Odyssey Condominiums). For all you locals, that space used to be Yaku – the Peruvian inspired Asian Fusion cuisine gone awry. Sushi Rock with its minor cosmetic changes like paint color scheme, adding some chains and electric guitars and a few wall artwork here and there, I was afraid I was just walking into a revamped Yaku.

What a pleasant surprise. Mentally filed in the “likes” category for now (since many restaurants have a tendency to go down hill after a few years). How refreshing that an establishment allows table diners the perks of bar happy hour specials! Upon reviewing the menu, I was intrigued. 99% of sushi restaurants can border on boring when it comes to type of rolls – standard California roll, tuna/spicy tuna, salmon/spicy salmon, cucumber, avocado, and eel. ~Snore. Sushi Rock teeters on crazy when it comes to some of its combos. I stay on the conservative side with my first go. The “comfortably numb” roll – love that tuna, jalapeno, cilantro, ginger combo though the sushi guy must have mistaken the habanero sauce for ponzu sauce? Tuna was fresh, quality was good, and impressive cuts. The “Voodoo Child” roll (spicy lobster salad, tobiko, cucumber and shiso) wasn’t bad. Sweet and fresh lobster meat would have been phenomenal but not shocked that it was mediocre lobster meat. If you are more of a purest with sushi, stay away from “Axl Rose”. No one should do it… but if done…should never put that much cream cheese in sushi. The Old Bay fries were tasty.  Service could have been better but wasn’t too bad. I give my dining experience a 5 out of 10 FAS points (Food, Ambiance, Service). I’ll let you in on a secret, if you drive, there is free retail parking space in the garage next to Sushi Rock’s entrance.  Don’t tell anyone or you’ll ruin it for all of us who know!
