Shirlington Virginia
Following on from Brooke Schara’s recent blog, Eat, sleep, work and play in Arlington’s Shirlington District, I couldn’t agree more that Shirlington Village is such a fun Arlington neighborhood. There are so many restaurants and bars located in a small area. This makes Shirlington, Arlington the perfect walkable
neighborhood, as most Shirlington condo owners and residents have a variety of choice on their doorstep, they rarely feel the need to go elsewhere, making the need for a car optional.
Shirlington residents can significantly reduce their carbon footprint, as many large companies are located in the Shirlington VA community, making it a nice short commute via foot, or even shorter commute by bike. For those for work elsewhere in the Arlington or the metropolitan area, there are great transportation options in Shirlington. The Shirlington Bus Station is serviced by the Metrobus and the Dashbus, the Dashbus services the Alexandria neighborhoods, including Old Town Alexandria, which is a perfect for a night on the town in this historical colonial neighborhood. The Metrobus runs directly from Shirlington to the Pentagon, where for those going into Washington DC can transfer onto the Yellow or Blue Metroline. The Metrobus also runs an express service to the Pentagon in the mornings and evening, making Shirlington VA a perfect Arlington neighborhood for people who work at the Pentagon, Crystal City or Pentagon City.
Saturday and Sunday Brunch in Shirlington is a popular venue, and during the spring, summer and fall the streets remind me of being in Europe with each restaurant overflowing onto the sidewalk. Nearly every restaurant and bar in Shirlington has an outside seating area. I love watching as people enjoy the various array of food which is offered in Shirlington VA restaurants, whilst dining alfresco. On the other side of the outside seating area you can see the community dogs waiting patiently and watching in anticipation whilst their owners eat, with hopes that they will receive some leftovers. With the food being of such a high standard in Shirlington their hopes of leftovers is highly unlikely, as there are never many empty plates to be seen in this dining arena.
Shirlington VA restaurants allow you to taste different cuisines of the world without ever leaving the county of Virginia. Shirlington is home to a cultural mix of restaurants including Thai, Middle East, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, American and much more. Capital Brewpub, is a restaurant brewery where you can sample locally brewed beer, the beer is brewed onsite, making the beer’s carbon footprint almost invisible. Shirlington VA restaurants, along with Rosslyn, Courthouse and Clarendon’s restaurants will be featured at the 2010 Taste of Arlington in Ballston, Sunday May 16th from Noon – 5pm.
