ReBuild Warehouse Allows Consumers to Reuse Building Materials
I recently had an opportunity to take a tour of the 12,000 square foot ReBuild warehouse in Springfield, Virginia. Paul Hughes showed me what ReBuild has to offer for home owners and home builders.
For home owners
, you can find everything (including the kitchen sink), at deep discounts below what you would pay for similar new materials at your local hardware store. These materials vary considerably in age and wear, which makes the experience kind of fun. For such a large selection of items, the warehouse is surprisingly well organized. Below is a quick list of things I remember seeing:
- Hardwood flooring in a variety of wood choices
- Granite and marble counter top
- Toilets in several colors
- Bathroom and kitchen sinks
- Garbage disposals
- Cabinetry
- Wood in all ages, conditions and sizes
- Appliances
- HVAC systems
- Ceiling fans
If you can’t find what you are looking for in-stock, you can add an entry to the wish list. For example, if you are looking for a set of french doors, you can add a description and your contact information to the wish list. When an item that matches your description comes into the warehouse, one of the friendly members of the ReBuild team will give you a call. Most items can even be delivered for a small charge.
I was shocked to see members of the ReBuild team approaching people to help find what they are looking for and answering questions. The level of customer service appeared to be much higher than what I have grown to expect from the larger hardware stores in our area.
Where do all these building materials come from?
Let’s say you are a home owner that is ready to do some renovating. Or, a builder brought in to excavate a home. You have the choice of adding to our land fills with the existing materials that are being replaced or donating the materials to ReBuild. What you may not realize is that Uncle Sam provides a tax incentive for the latter option. At ReBuild they are willing to take a wide range of materials, which allows the home owner or home builder to donate more. In some cases, the tax incentive is large enough to counter the entire cost of excavation.
You get to leave a lighter footprint on the earth and save money! This seems to be a reoccurring trend when making green decisions. If your project is going for LEED certification, donating your materials for re-use may be a good way to pick up some crucial points.
Paul Hughes, the Executive Director of ReBuild also explained to me that they expanding their services to provide green collar services. An example of the type of service they provide is removal of invasive plants. We will have to follow up in a future blog to get more into depth on the services they provide.
Getting to the ReBuild ware house is easy. It took less than 15 minutes door-to-door from the Arbour Realty office in Ballston. It is located just off of the Edsall Road exit of 395. 6625-B Iron Place, Springfield, VA 22151.
