October 10th through the 11th, Washington DC welcomes back the sixth annual Green Festival™, a joint project of Global Exchange and Green America.

Built on the strong foundation of environmental conservation and education, Green Festival™ is the nation’s largest green affair which can claim the bragging rights as a zero-waste event! With the Green Festival™ project, Global Exchange has the vision to create “people-centered globalization that values the rights of workers and the health of the planet; that prioritizes international collaboration as central to ensuring peace; and that aims to create a local, green economy designed to embrace the diversity of our communities.” And nearly three decades into Green America’s initiative, they are still standing steadfast to their commitment to “work on issues of social justice and environmental responsibility” by educating the masses through events and programs such as this year’s Green Festival™. How much more passionate can you get about your global family?!

DC’s 2009 Green Festival™ making its sixth return this fall will feature everything from delicious organic foods, workshops for making your own reusable shopping bag out of a recycled T-shirt donated by Goodwill, to the practice of the healing arts of Yoga, and even a space where event-goers can experience the craft of brick making! The Green Home Pavillion will showcase the healthy-living junky’s DIY dream panel of experts and demonstrations ranging from indoor composting with earthworms (yeah!) to an eco-closet organization makeover.

Programs are still being arranged at the present, but they do have a very comprehensive website,www.greenfestivals.org, which highlights the programs, over 350 eco-friendly vendors, events, numerous keynote speakers (DC Green Festival™ welcomes the likes of author Amy Goodman and actor/activist Ed Begley, Jr.), and initiatives that will be on exhibition for two days.

Passes are currently on sale and can be purchased on the website for variable rates; I mention the variable rates because you can spend anywhere from $15-$100 depending on your desired amenities. Keep in mind that children under 18 and current members of Global Exchange and Green America are welcome to the event for free! This is the perfect introduction for those who may have just begun their personal journey towards healthy living and sustainability. It is a great venue to learn and grow with like-minded neighbors who are taking their curiosity about environmental balance to the next level.

  1. Are you still digesting all of the information from the 2009 DC Green Festival™?

[...] The sixth annual Green Festival™, a joint project of Global Exchange and Green America, was again, an astonishing hit! Walking into the event center, dozens of helpful volunteers patrolled the vastness seeking out those of us with the ever-present deer-in-headlights look of sheer overwhelm. There was so much to see and so much to learn! The convention center, which I am sure, usually does not have the aroma of a whole food store but did for this particular weekend, was buzzing with thousands of like minded individuals seeking knowledge and- let’s just come right out and say it- they were there for the gratis loot!
