It’s 2009 and I would hope that everyone is doing their part by recycling. I think that many of us out their see ourselves as recycling experts,  but it seems that some of our recycling habits could be doing more harm than recyclinggood. Certain items that get placed in the recycling box can in fact result in all your items ending up in the landfill site and not being recycled at all.

The biggest culprit according to a recent article featured on Forecast Earth’s website is plastic bags. Plastic bags are not recyclable at the recycling plant.   Plastic bags cause plant workers numerous problems. If they are mixed with the rest of the recyclables, then they often end up get entangled in the machinery and result in the system breaking down, which wastes time and money. Other problems they tend to cause is when we try to be helpful  by bagging up our recyclables.  Many recycling plants won’t allow employees to open plastic bag to avoid possible contamination or incidents with sharp objects. This results in the bag and it’s contents being sent to the landfill.

Plastic bags are not the only non-recycleable item being sent to the recycling plant.  Other non- recyclable items that end up in the recycle bin are plastic bottle caps, frozen meal boxes, soy milk cartons, shredded office paper, and glass not from bottles household items like a vase, glasses etc.  Thankfully many of these items can be recycled by different methods. In fact we can recycle and reuse many items by using a little creativity or common sense.  I reuse my plastic bags as trash bags for normal household waste, and shredded paper makes for great packing when I send fragile packages. There are numerous way to reuse and recycle.  Any other suggestions would be most welcomed.
