Disposing of Paint the Environmentally Friendly Way!!
I have noticed that whenever I decorate at home, I either have too much pain or not enough; it never seems to be just the right amount. Often, it seems that I only need a minimal amount more to finish that last wall. Unfortunately, most home decorating stores only seem to sell paint in one size. This results in most people having a variety of half empty paint cans lying around the house.
The abundance of paint cans can be annoying, but before you through them out with the trash consider the chemical found within are harmful to you and the environment. Therefore, deposing of paint the correct way is very important. Obviously, my first piece of advice would be to apply an extra coat of paint and use it up. You may want to have a look around the house and garden and check to see if there are any items that could use a lick of paint, i.e. fences, patio furniture etc. Waste of any kind is not good, and therefore pick up the Yellow Pages and see if local charities would be in need of some leftover paint.
If you can’t find anyone to take the extra paint, dispose of latex (not oil or enamel) paint by painting a cardboard box until all the paint is gone, allowing the box to dry fully, then discarding it in the regular trash. Oil paint cannot be discarded in the trash. Call your municipal government or fire department non-emergency number to find out when you can drop the paint off at an official household hazardous-waste disposal event.
Do you have any green home hints? I would love to hear them.
