Shirlington Village Deserves a Warm Introduction
Shirlington Village is the underrated, artistic side of Arlington that is going to surprise you if you haven’t been there in a minute. I’m pleasantly surprised every time I go back.
First things first… the best way to experience Shirlington for the first time is over a meal. This is the perfect time of year as many of the restaurants offer outdoor seating. You are not going to go wrong so pick your restaurant based on what you are in the mood for… sushi, Thai, Mexican, American, Spanish. If you are looking for the coolest new spot on the block go to Busboys and Poets. If you want the local favorite, try Carlyle Grand. For an after work martini I highly recommend Extra Virgin.
If you pop into Shirlington Village during the a.m. hours pick up something freshly baked at Best Buns before grabbing a coffee at Caribou or fruit smoothie at Robeks. Game on!
One of my favorite movie theaters is in Shirlington. It’s a great place to catch independent films and limited distribution movies. Shirlington also offers live performances at Signature Theater.
A notable addition to Shirlington is the new state-of-the-art library that just opened in 2007. Yes, even the library is impressive. Also new is the Harris Teeter grocery store. You know a neighborhood has arrived when a Whole Foods or Harris Teeter open up. Don’t worry; Shirlington still has its soul. It hasn’t sold out, it is just adding some conveniences to the village.
Where to live in Shirlington? My favorite condo is Shirlington Village located next door to Harris Teeter. They come with gourmet kitchens but who needs to cook around here. Pick up something already made at Harris Teeter or enjoy a new restaurant every night of the week. The building has its own concierge, swimming pool, fitness center and parking. The bottom floor has loft style homes with individual entrances to the outside. It’s a fun space with exposed ductwork and an urban feel.
Stanley Martin has just started building beautiful brick townhouses in Shirlington. The neighborhood is called Shirlington Crest. Where else in Arlington are you going to find brand new townhouses this nice and this convenient to DC priced from the mid $500’s?
West Village of Shirlington includes condos and townhouses that have been completely converted from the inside out. I’ve seen conversions before, but nothing with such a positive result. The exteriors look like an artsy, modern construction. The interiors at West Village of Shirlington look like they are straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog. The prices are perfect for first time homebuyers in Arlington.
Other neighborhoods in Shirlington to consider are Fairlington, Windgate, Brittany and The Grove. This is a whole spectrum from new to classic. I would be happy to share more information with you about Shirlington and any of these neighborhoods in Shirlington.
What is the drawback to Shirlington? No Metrorail Stations. If you drive to work this won’t be a problem. You are located within minutes of DC. If you do depend on the Metro, it still isn’t a big issue. The Metro and ART busses offer frequent shuttles to the local Metro Stations.
It might be worth considering Shirlington for your next Arlington home purchase. It is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Arlington.
