Arlington Virginia boasts many accomplishments in 2007
It is important to take a look back at the accomplishments of 2007 for Arlington, Virginia. Arlington continues to be one of the most progressive counties on the East Coast in the areas of affordable housing, infrastructure, environmental responsibility and education.
The new Shirlington Library, Signature Theatre and Greenbriar Park were all completed in 2007. The residents and leadership of Arlington have placed importance on balance as the county continues to grow.
A community plan was implemented to preserve historic Buckingham Villages, including the addition of 300 new committed affordable apartments and several new public amenities.
Central Place, two towers in the heart of Rosslyn, which will revitalize the neighborhood’s street life, was approved. The project will redefine the skyline and offer accessible view to the public. Central place is destined to be a landmark in Arlington and provide one of the premiere views in the DC area.
Major development plans were approved for Shirlington, Potomac Yards, Virginia Square and several universities.
The BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) Transition Center opened in Crystal City.
Hotel Palomar Arlington, the County’s first boutique hotel, opened in Rosslyn overlooking Georgetown and the Washington, DC monuments. Hotel Palomar brings a hip new choice for Arlington visitors.
Fresh AIRE, the County’s initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, held government energy consumption steady even as new facilities opened. The County increased its purchase of wind-produced energy and reduced its carbon footprint by 1,060 tons. Arlington is on target to meet its Fresh AIRE goal of reducing government greenhouse gas emissions 10% from 2000 levels by 2012.
For the 4th consecutive year, all four Arlington Public high schools ranked in the top 1% of the nation’s high school in Newsweek magazine ratings.
Crime rate dropped to its lowest since 1960.
Unemployment held below 2 percent – the lowest in Virginia.
